The Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) is a government scheme where both the working professional and the employer contribute a portion of an individual’s salary. The EPF helps a salaried employee maintain a sufficient post-retirement or emergency fund, on which tax benefits are applied. Your Universal Account Number (UAN) is the account where EPF deposits are made.
While employees are aware their EPFs are being deducted, many of them have no idea how to access them. To check a PF balance, a salaried employee needs to activate the Universal Account Number. If you don’t know how to activate your UAN, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. There is a fairly simple process involved in activating the PF deposits account.
How To Activate The UAN Online
The UAN applies only to those who get the PF deducted from their salary. It is usually displayed on the payslip of your monthly salary. If the UAN is not provided on the payslip itself, a salaried employee will have to contact and access it from the finance department of their organisation.
To activate the UAN and check your PF balance, an employee must visit the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) website and follow the step-by-step guideline given below:
Step 1: Go to the official EPFO website (https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/)
Step 2: Navigate to the bottom right corner of the page and click ‘Activate UAN’
Step 3: Provide the UAN, name, date of birth, mobile number and the captcha text asked.
Step 4: Click Get Authorization Pin
Step 5: Access and copy the one-time password (OTP) sent to your registered mobile number
Step 6: Verify the details on the EPFO page
Step 7: Tick the check box next to ‘I Agree’
Step 8: Paste the OTP from your phone next to ‘Enter OTP’
Step 9: Click on ‘Validate OTP’ and ‘Activate UAN’
Once your UAN activation is complete, a password will be sent to your mobile number. However, salaried employees will still have to wait for a period of six hours before they can log in to the EPFO portal to check their PF balance.
