A social media post claims that turmeric and lemon can force sugar out of the body during urination. After thorough fact checking, we found that this claim is false.

The Claim

A Facebook video claims that turmeric and lemon can quickly remove sugar from the body through urination, making it an easy cure for diabetes. It features Dr P Raghu Ram, who supposedly won a Nobel Prize for this discovery and cured England’s royal family of diabetes. The doctor claims the royal family is now diabetes-free and happy. He also says he wants to help Indians get rid of diabetes without medication. The video tells viewers to click a link to learn the remedy.

Fact Check

Can turmeric and lemon remove sugar from the body through urination?

No, there is no scientific basis for this claim. The kidneys regulate blood sugar levels by filtering excess glucose from the blood only when sugar levels are too high. This is known as glycosuria, which occurs in uncontrolled diabetes, not in normal sugar metabolism.

Turmeric and lemon do not play a role in forcing sugar out of the body. While turmeric contains curcumin, which has some anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and lemon is rich in vitamin C, neither ingredient can alter kidney function or regulate sugar excretion. The only way sugar leaves the body naturally is through metabolism, energy use, and insulin regulation—not through a forced process by food items.

We spoke with Dr Almas Fatma, MBBS, Diploma in Family Medicine, PG in Digital Health, General Physician from Navi Mumbai, for her expert opinion on whether turmeric and lemon can remove sugar from the body and cure diabetes. She clarified, “There is no scientific evidence that turmeric and lemon can flush sugar out of the body through urination. Insulin and metabolism regulate blood sugar levels, not sugar elimination through urine. Proper diabetes management includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, and medication as prescribed by a doctor.”

Dr Ubaid ur Rahman, General physician at Holy Mission Clinic, New Delhi, says, “Diabetes needs lifelong care with healthy habits, regular exercise, and proper medical treatment. Following a doctor’s advice, taking prescribed medication, and monitoring blood sugar are key to managing it. Relying on unproven remedies can delay treatment and cause serious health risks.”

Do turmeric and lemon cure diabetes instantly?

No, diabetes is a lifelong condition that needs continuous management. While certain dietary habits may help regulate blood sugar, there is no instant cure.

Turmeric has been studied for its potential to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation, but research is still ongoing. Lemon, rich in antioxidants and fibre, supports overall health but does not cure diabetes. Some studies suggest it may help manage blood sugar, but we need more research.

Vitamin C has also been explored for its role in diabetes. A 2007 study found that taking 1,000 mg daily for six weeks lowered blood sugar and fat levels, reducing the risk of complications. Research from 2014 indicated that people with diabetes may need more vitamin C. In 2016, another study suggested that a diet rich in vitamin C could help protect against type 2 diabetes.

Proper diabetes management includes:

  • A balanced diet with controlled carbohydrate intake
  • Regular exercise to improve insulin sensitivity
  • Medication or insulin therapy as prescribed by a doctor
  • Frequent blood sugar monitoring to prevent complications

Trusting quick fixes can be risky. Ignoring proper medical care might cause blood sugar levels to spike, leading to serious complications like nerve damage, kidney failure, or even diabetic ketoacidosis.

Harita Adhvaryu, Senior Clinical Dietitian at Ezcure Diabetes Care, Ahmedabad, explains, “Many people believe in quick-fix diabetes cures, but managing the condition takes time and effort. There are no shortcuts—controlling diabetes requires a balanced diet, regular exercise, and proper medical care for long-term health.”

Did Dr P Raghu Ram win a Nobel Prize for this remedy?

No, this claim is completely false. There is no record of Dr P Raghu Ram winning a Nobel Prize for a diabetes cure. He is a senior surgeon in India and a Padma Shri awardee for his contributions to medicine, but there is no evidence of him promoting this remedy.

The Nobel Prize database does not list any such achievement, and no medical journals or credible news sources report this discovery. The only Nobel Prize related to diabetes was awarded in 1923 to Banting and Macleod for making insulin widely available. The UK’s royal family has also made no such claims about being cured of diabetes.

A review of Dr P Raghu Ram’s social media and recent news shows no association with this remedy. The video uses an AI-generated voice with poor lip sync and unnatural expressions, a common tactic in misinformation campaigns to exploit public trust.

Similarly, another video falsely claims that Dr Raghu Ram cured diabetes in three days using baking soda. This, too, is AI-generated and completely false.

Why does the video not provide the actual remedy?

The video makes sensational claims but never explains how turmeric and lemon supposedly cure diabetes. Instead, it directs viewers to a non-existent link. Such tactics are often used to sell fake health products, boost social media engagement, or spread misinformation for views. This is a red flag, and it’s important to verify health information from reliable sources.

THIP Media Take

The claim that turmeric and lemon can force sugar out of the body during urination is false. The video is AI-generated and misuses the image of Dr P Raghu Ram to deceive viewers. Diabetes cannot be cured instantly with home remedies, and proper medical treatment is necessary for its management. Beware of false health claims and always rely on scientific evidence.
