Family of Rye tradie shooting victim Jackson Gilmour break their silence over double killing on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula – as killer remains on the loose

EXCLUSIVE

A tradie shot dead when an armed couple broke into his house has been identified, leaving the family in ‘shock’ over the tragedy.

Jackson Gilmour, 29, was asleep inside his Parson St home in Rye, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, when a woman and man armed with a rifle broke into the home shortly after 4am.

A female guest staying at Mr Gilmour’s home rushed to the bathroom and called police while he confronted the pair.

It is understood the female intruder then beat Mr Gilmour with a baton and demanded he hand over his wallet and other personal belongings as she rummaged through his drawers.

Mr Gilmour then shot the woman and was himself shot by the male intruder who fled the scene and remains on the run.

Mr Gilmour and the female intruder were treated by paramedics, but both died at the scene.

A relative told Daily Mail Australia on Tuesday that Mr Gilmour’s family are still seeking information on the chain of events leading up to his death.

Mr Gilmour, who was affectionately known as Jack to friends, had lived on the Mornington Peninsula for more than 10 years.

Daily Mail Australia understands he worked as a tradesman, with his family owning and operating construction and plumbing businesses in the area.

Posts on social media show Mr Gilmour skiing and riding motorbikes, spending time with friends, and enjoying trips overseas.

Property records show he had moved into the three-bedroom rental property in December last year.

Detective Superintendent Janet Stevenson said police believe Mr Gilmour and the two intruders were known to each other and that the incident was targeted.

She said the second man, who police are yet to identify, is believed to have taken off in a vehicle and could still be armed.

‘We don’t know if there is still a firearm outstanding [and] we presume there was a getaway car,’ she told reporters on Monday.

‘We are seeking to find out the identity of the man and we are appealing for anyone who may have been in that area this morning who may have seen something.

‘If you have dashcam footage or CCTV please contact us or Crime Stoppers.’

Det Supt Stevenson said police are yet to determine what led the couple to break into the home, but one line of inquiry was whether drugs were involved.

She said police are still investigating how many people were at the home at the time and where the guns involved in the shooting came from.

Mr Gilmour was known to police, but Det Supt Stevenson would not confirm the nature of previous interactions.

The double-death has shocked residents of Rye, a wealthy seaside suburb 98km south of Melbourne, known for its beaches.

Local residents told Daily Mail Australia on Monday that they did not hear anything around the time of the incident.
