FC Barcelona has been quietly working on their future planning behind the scenes with one of their major concerns being the position of a keeper. Barcelona’s sporting director Deco has begun identifying potential candidates and one name that seems pretty high on his list is RCD Mallorca keeper Leo Roman. According to Fichajes, Roman’s magnificent rise in La Liga could land him a hefty deal in near future with the prominent club.
While German Marc-Andre ter Stegen remains Barcelona’s No.1 keeper until next season and Wojciech Szczesny acts as a temporary backup, head coach Hansi Flick’s men are planning a long-term bid on Roman. The report suggests that the Spanish footballer caught Deco’s attention with his impressive display in the match against Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu earlier this week. The sporting director is learnt to have shared the proposal with Flick.
The discussions could be based on Roman’s current contract situation with RCD Mallorca. Running till 2026, the 24-year-old’s contract has a release clause worth €12 million. But Barcelona could be weighing a potential offer in the region of €7 million to €8 million, which could be enough to secure his signing as per the report.
The offer could be made based on Roman’s potential with a future transfer also providing Barcelona a chance to fetch profits. It sets up a clear roadmap for the club, which could be expected to sign Roman now and loan him to a different La Liga club for the 2025-26 season while Szczesny remains part of Barcelona as a backup keeper. An approach like that would ensure a smooth transition without any wastage of resources at the club’s disposal.
Notably, Roman made 10 saves and conceded two goals in Mallorca’s 2-1 loss to Real Madrid on Wednesday, May 14. His season tally as a goalkeeper stands at 7 goals with him also maintaining 2 clean sheets in 6 matches for coach Jagoba Arrasate’s men. With 31 of the 39 shots faced in the competition, Roman has a save percentage of nearly 80% while his per 90 minutes goal count stands at 1.14.
