Barcelona are reportedly keen to hand a contract extension to Frankie de Jong. The Dutch midfielder has become a key component of Hansi Flick’s squad. Since recovering from an ankle injury, De Jong has gradually cemented his place in the playing eleven, beating Mark Casado in the pecking order. He has performed brilliantly as a holding midfielder alongside Pedri. Considering his improvement, Barcelona have reportedly decided to renew De Jong’s contract for three seasons. His current deal is slated to expire in 2026.

Earlier in February, Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco met De Jong’s agent, Ali Dursun, to discuss the new contract. The decision was supported by Flick, who felt the Dutchman would be crucial for his tactical setup.

Barcelona want to extend De Jong’s stay until 2029 while maintaining his current salary of approximately €18-19 million per season. The La Liga giants, however, may find it difficult to pay the huge amount, given their ongoing financial struggle.

A report by Sport claimed that Barcelona have identified a way to cover the salary with a “slight adjustment”. De Jong can continue playing with his current wages, but only if a portion of his earnings remains associated with performance-based incentives.

It means the fixed salary will be lower than his current one. Barcelona, however, will compensate for it by increasing the bonuses. De Jong will receive an additional amount for total appearances and titles won, which is expected to keep his overall earnings at the same level. De Jong also remains adamant about parting ways with Barcelona, as he feels the team will achieve tremendous success under Flick.

Amid all the buzz about his potential contract renewal, a recent report by Spanish outlet Fichajes claimed that Barcelona were exploring the possibility of selling De Jong in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Liverpool is reportedly interested in signing the 27-year-old as a long-term replacement for Fabinho. The Premier League club may offer around €40 million for De Jong, who has captained Barcelona in several recent matches.

The former Ajax man joined Barcelona in the summer of 2019. He has already made 241 appearances for the Catalan giants while registering 19 goals and 22 assists.
