New Zealand star opener Finn Allen broke a plethora of individual and team records in the opening clash of the 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC), smashing a sensational 51-ball 151 for the San Francisco Unicorns against Washington Freedom in Oakland on Friday (June 13).

Firstly, his knock was laced with as many as 19 sixes (more than triple his boundaries, five), which is now the most maximums hit in a T20 innings, ever. It goes past Sahil Chauhan’s 18 sixes for Estonia against Cyprus in June 2024. It was also the highest-ever score in the history of the competition, beating Nicholas Pooran’s unbeaten 137 for MI New York against Seattle Orcas in Dallas in 2023.

137 49 7 15 279.59 Hungary v Austria 05 June 2022

Allen was off to a great start, taking a particular liking to his compatriots Ben Sears and Rachin Ravindra, whom he hit for four sixes and two boundaries in the powerplay overs. He reached fifty off 20 balls and took just 14 more to get to his three figures — 34 balls being the fastest-ever in the competition, again beating Pooran’s record of 40 balls. It was also the quickest T20 century for a New Zealand player.

In a total of 49 deliveries, he reached his 150, breaking South African Dewald Brevis’ record for the fastest 150 in a T20 game (52). Overall, it was the 15th-highest individual score in T20s.

Allen’s knock carried his team to a brilliant 269/5 in the first innings. He got out in the 18th over off Mitchel Owen’s bowling.

“It was exciting, off to a good start, found the boundaries regularly, we had a few partnerships and got a good score on the board,” Allen said in the mid-innings break, as quoted by Cricbuzz. “The boundaries are fairly decent, we’ll have to bowl the right line and lengths, field well, and we can defend this score,” he added.

Freedom started the massive chase well, too, scoring 89/1 in the powerplay, at the time of writing. Owen was caught out at 37 but Liam Plunkett was shown to have over-stepped.
