The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is nearing its end. In a surprise announcement on July 17, CBS revealed its decision to put an end to the famous franchise featuring show host Stephen Colbert. The news has shocked many, including Jimmy Kimmel, who firmly stood by his friend after the tragic announcement.

In an Instagram Story posted by Kimmel, he shared support for his friend, without mincing his words in his message to the CBS Network. “Love you Stephen. And F**k you CBS and all your Sheldons,” read the post. Notedly, his message was a subtle dig at the network which also hosted the show The Big Bang Theory, which had Sheldon Cooper as one of its main leads.

While both Kimmel and Colbert compete for viewers with a similar storyline of the shows they host, the duo share mutual respect and genuine friendship.

Why is ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ being cancelled?

According to the network, it has decided to shelve the show, with the final episode being aired in May 2026. While the CBS leadership describes it as a “purely financial decision,” which has nothing to do with “other matters happening at Paramount,” the fans refuse to agree.

As per the fans of the show, this might be an attempt to shut the voices that make anti-Trump jokes or woke rants. This cancellation is alleged to be an unsaid warning for all late-night hosts that have often criticised the Trump administration.

Colbert too confirmed the news on the Thursday episode, stating that this will be the last season for the show. He also clarified that he is not being replaced, but the network is scrapping the show altogether.

The show was initially hosted by David Letterman, who left it to join The Late Show with David Letterman with NBC in 1993. Colbert later took up his role as the host of the CBS show in 2015.

Earlier, in 2023, CBS cancelled The Late Late Show featuring James Corden, stating that the time slot was no longer profitable for the network.

This may mark an end to the late night show era for CBS. For Kimmel, whose contract is ending next year, it is yet to be seen if Disney renews his contract for Jimmy Kimmel Live.
