There is no limit to the football frenzied’s imagination. And a recent example in Italy showcased the same.
AS Roma fans drove themselves into a frenzy, thanks to a run-of-the-mill tribute video (along with Italian media reports) which had them believing that former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp might be taking over.
To track back the roots of this madness, let’s revisit the social media post that some may be reading far too much into.
Roma owner the Friedkin Group posted a video on Friday celebrating the capital club and its legacy.
From Rome to the world, the voice of @OfficialASRoma echoes with pride, resilience, and identity. We’re proud to walk alongside this club—honoring its past, investing in its future. Together, we move forward: with heart, with honor, with Roma.❤️💛 pic.twitter.com/gWltOHgC1d— The Friedkin Group (@friedkingroup) May 16, 2025
The video included images of iconic Rome sites: Colosseum (Kolosseum in German), Lupa Capitolina, Olimpico, (St.) Peter’s and Pantheon in that order.
Someone pointed out the starting letters of those words — some in Italian, some in German, some omitting part of the name — spell Klopp. And it spiralled from there.
To add to it all, Italian newspaper La Stampa proclaimed that Klopp accepted Roma’s offer shortly after the Giallorossi’s final home match of the season on Sunday, when a packed Stadio Olimpico paid tribute to current coach Claudio Ranieri, who is set to depart at the end of the season.
Other media outlets picked up La Stampa’s story, but the same newspaper said on Tuesday that Roma has “categorically denied” the news.
Upon the news flooding the internet, Klopp’s agent, Kosicke, set out to silence all murmurs with a prompt five-word response.
“This news is not true,” he stated to winwin.com in an exclusive interview.
Klopp, 57, is under contract with Red Bull until the end of 2029. He began his professional coaching career as the coach of Mainz between 2001 and 2008, before taking over at Borussia Dortmund until the summer of 2015, leading them to the 2013 Champions League final before losing to Bayern Munich in the final.
Jürgen Klopp joined Liverpool in October 2015, leading them to a historic era that saw them win the Premier League title for the first time in 30 years in 2020 and the Champions League for the first time in 14 years in the 2018-19 season. He left at the end of last season to be succeeded by Dutchman Arne Slot.
The Friedkin Group also owns Liverpool’s city rival, Everton.
