Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz got his French Open 2025 title defence off to a flying start as he romped past Italian Giulio Zeppieri in straight sets on Monday.
The 22-year-old Alcaraz breezed to a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 win over Zeppieri at the Court Susan Lenglen to move into the second round of the clay court event at Roland Garros. Alcaraz came into the clay-court major on the back of titles at Monte Carlo and the Italian Open in the tune-up to the Grand Slam event.

Iga Swiatek, the three-time defending champion at Paris, cruised into the second round of the women’s section with a statement win over Serbian Rebecca Sramkova on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
The Pole breezed past Sramkova with a dominant 6-3, 6-3 straight sets to assert her dominance on the red-courts for a fourth straight season.

“I knew I needed to stay proactive and try to use my weapons,” Swiatke said following her opening round win.
“I’m happy with my performance and it was a solid match,” the 23-year-old added.
Swiatek is set to take on Brit Emma Raducanu, who returns to the French Open for the first time since 2022. The 22-year-old former US Open winner, Raducanu, also got off to a positive start on clay as she got the better of Wang Xinyu in a hard-fought 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win on Monday.

Swiatek, who holds a 4-0 record over Raducanu in the head-to-head meetings between the two, will look to add to her count against the Briton when they face off on the 28th of the month. Swiatek, who also won the French Open in the year 2020, is aiming for her fifth clay court major crown.
