French side Olympique Lyon reached an amicable agreement for the early termination of the contract of former Serbian international Nemanja Matic on Thursday.
The 37-year-old midfielder’s contract had been due to run until June 30, 2026. However, the club opted to shed one of its highest-paid players in their effort to reduce the wage bill.
“It was an unforgettable journey,” the seasoned midfielder said in a post on social media platform X.
“I made forever lasting memories at OL. Together we managed to bring the club back to winning ways,” he added.
“Thanks to OL fans all over the world. Wishing everyone at OL best of luck in the upcoming season,” Matic concluded.

The club said in an update, “Nemanja Matić and OL end their collaboration. Thank you for all the great moments, Nemanja. Best of luck for the future.”

The former Manchester United, Chelsea and Benfica, joined Lyon in January 2024 from league rivals Rennes and played a key role in helping Lyon move from last at the 2023-2024 winter break to finish sixth, qualifying for the Europa League, and playing in the French Cup final, losing 2-1 to Paris Saint-Germain.
He has made a total of 58 appearances for Lyon who open their campaign at Lens on Saturday. Matic also earned 48 caps for his national side Serbia during his years active as an international player between 2008 and 2020.
