The category winners and shortlisted entries in the Open competition of the 2025 Sony World Photography Awards have been unveiled – and the images yet again show why this is one of the world’s most prestigious photo contests.
Over 419,000 images from over 200 countries and territories were submitted to this year’s awards, which ‘celebrates the ability of an individual photograph to capture and distil a singular moment and to evoke a broader narrative’.
Scenes captured in this year’s portfolio of incredible Open category imagery include a monkey grooming a villager, the ‘breathtaking’ moment a leopard walks along the bough of a tree, ‘otherworldly weeping plum trees’, polar bears enjoying a ‘royal feast’ of whale, elegantly dressed alpacas and a fairytale French monastery.
The Open Photographer of the Year will be announced at a ceremony in London on April 16 and will receive a $5,000/£3,872 cash prize and ‘a range of Sony digital imaging equipment’.
A selection of the images will go on display at Somerset House in London from April 17-May 5, 2025, before travelling to other locations.
