Jawaharlal Nehru first visited the US in 1949. Indira Gandhi’s first visit was in 1966. Rajiv Gandhi addressed the US Congress in 1985. Narendra Modi has visited the US multiple times since 2014.

Several Indian PMs including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Manmohan Singh, and Narendra Modi made key visits to the US while in office.

Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, went to the US for the first time as the President’s guest in October 1949. Thereafter, the visited America three more times, in 1956, 1960 and 1961.

Indira Gandhi embarked on her first visit to the US as the first woman Prime Minister of India in March 1966, just two months after taking over the PM office. During her second visit in November 1971, she met then US president Richard Nixon. The last time she visited the US as a PM was in 1982.

Ex-Prime Minister Morarji Desai visited US in June 1978 on the invitation of then US President Jimmy Carter.

Former PM Rajiv Gandhi went on an official visit to the US in June 1985. He was the first Indian PM to address a joint session of US Congress. He went to US for two more times in 1985 and 1987.

Former PM PV Narasimha Rao went on an official visit to the US in January 1992 when he met erstwhile US President George Bush at a UN Security Council Summit in New York. He again went to America in May 1994 to address a joint meeting of the Congress.

Ex-PM Inder Kumar Gujral went to the US on a official visit in September 1997 when he met then US President Bill Clinton at UN General Assembly in New York City.

Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee went to the US on an official visit in September 2000 to address a joint session of Congress. Vajpayee embarked on US visit three more times, in 2001, 2002 and 2003.

Manmohan Singh, embarked on an official visit to America as a PM in September 2004 when he met then US President George Bush at UN General Assembly. During his decade-long tenure, the Singh altogether headed to the US for eight times.

Narendra Modi went to the US as an Indian PM for the first time in September 2014, the year BJP swept general elections. During his first term as PM, he went to America four times, once in 2014 and 2017 and twice in 2016.

During his second term beginning 2019, PM Modi went US for three times. He has so far visited US twice after assuming PM office for the third time.
