Neeraj Singh, once a night security guard on the streets of Delhi, now owns more than half a dozen industrial enterprises in Bihar’s Shivhar district and employs over 2,000 people. At 39, Singh’s journey from poverty to prosperity stands as a powerful testament to perseverance, vision, and entrepreneurial grit.

A Modest Beginning

Born in Mathurapur village, Sheohar district, Neeraj Singh left home before the age of 18 in pursuit of work. He struggled to secure employment due to his young age and returned to his village, where he began selling petrol and diesel from a roadside kiosk. His determination to support his family, particularly the education of his younger brothers, pushed him to continue his search for opportunities.

Speaking to Local18, Singh recalled travelling across Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune in search of a livelihood. In Delhi, he worked exhausting shifts as a security guard, earning a modest salary of Rs 2,200 per month.

He later moved to Pune in 2004, where he gradually advanced to the role of HR assistant by 2006. Despite his progress, Singh’s breakthrough came only after returning to Bihar in 2009, following the death of his grandmother.

The Turning Point

In 2010, Singh secured a position with a microfinance company in Motihari for a salary of Rs 3,300 per month. During his fieldwork, he observed market conditions and began exploring business opportunities.

A pivotal moment came when he assisted a relative in purchasing land, earning Rs 25,000 in commission. He used this amount to start trading grains; a venture that laid the foundation of his business empire.

Building A Business Empire

From modest beginnings in grain trading, Singh quickly scaled his operations, reaching a turnover of Rs 20–30 crore annually within a few years. He expanded into several industries, including tiles, fibre blocks, fly ash bricks, NH dividers, road construction materials, flour milling, and traditional brick-making.

His flagship company, Usha Industry, named in honour of his mother, is now one of Bihar’s largest, supplying to government agencies and employing hundreds daily.

His younger brother, a trained engineer, has played a crucial role in managing the growing enterprise. Singh’s latest venture, a petrol station near Dumri on the Shivhar-Motihari road, marks yet another milestone in his expanding portfolio.

Today, Neeraj Singh’s businesses collectively employ more than 2,000 people, and his company boasts a turnover of Rs 400 crore. His story reflects the latent potential of Bihar’s youth and the impact of self-belief, resilience, and hard work.
