The FSSAI has categorized packaged drinking mineral water under the ‘High-Risk’ category. Here’s what this move implies.

The move aims to enhance consumer safety standards.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an order and has decided to treat packaged drinking mineral water as a ‘High-Risk Category.’ Under this new order, all packaged drinking and mineral water will be subject to mandatory inspections and third-party audits. With this move, the food body aims to improve the standards of products for consumers.

FSSAI said, “As a consequence of the omission of the mandatory Bureau of India certification for certain products, it has been decided that ‘Packaged Drinking Water and Mineral Water’ will be treated under ‘High-Risk Food Categories.’ It is reiterated that all centrally licensed manufacturers under high-risk food categories shall get their business audited annually by an FSSAI-recognised third-party food safety auditing agency.”

What Does The ‘High-Risk Category’ Mean?

The high-risk category includes food items that support bacterial growth. These ready-to-eat products must be handled carefully and separated from raw food. Experts mention that poor handling and hygiene can lead to serious consequences such as food poisoning or even death.

High-risk foods are those which are typically involved in cases of food poisoning. Apart from water, meat, chicken, and even vegetables come under this category.
