India Test skipper Shubman Gill, his deputy Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal on Saturday, June 21, matched a 22-year-old feat by batting legend Sachin Tendulkar and former captains Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly, to become the second trio from India to score individual hundreds at the Headingley.
The veterans’ centuries then paved the way for a huge Indian victory over England, and the next generation of Indian stars’ brilliant effort has given their team a potential shot at a famous win.
If anything, the centuries from the youngsters were a statement about India’s never-drying batting fountain.
23 years back, the centuries by the veterans and India drawing the Test series heralded a new chapter in the nation’s cricketing landscape as it started to wash away the tag of tigers at home.
But the task that awaits the likes of Jaiswal and Gill is quite different. India are now a side adept at touring, but they need to step into the huge shoes of some stalwarts who made the side a force to reckon with away from home.
Having opted to bat first, India lost Virender Sehwag in just the seventh over. Sanjay Bangar and Dravid then built a 170-run partnership for the second wicket before the former was dismissed by Andrew Flintoff.
Dravid and Tendulkar then added 150 runs for the third wicket before the former was dismissed by Ashley Giles. Tendulkar and skipper Ganguly then built a match-winning 249-run partnership before the latter was bowled by Alex Tudor. India declared their innings on 628/8.
England began their first innings well, with Rob Key and Michael Vaughan adding 67 runs for the opening stand before the former was dismissed by Zaheer Khan. Vaughan and Mark Butcher then added 42 runs for the second wicket, before the latter was caught plumb by Anil Kumble.
England soon found themselves at 185/7 in the 64th over, before wicketkeeper Alec Stewart and Giles added 70 runs for the eighth wicket. Once the latter was dismissed by Kumble, England folded for 273.
The hosts were asked to follow on, and after losing Vaughan in the 10th over, Key and Butcher added 48 runs for the second wicket. After Key was dismissed by Kumble, Butcher and skipper Nasser Hussain added 40 runs for the third wicket.
After Butcher was dismissed by Sanjay Bangar, Hussain and John Crawley added 32 runs for the fourth wicket, before the latter was dismissed by Bangar.
Hussain and Stewart then built a 117-run partnership before the former was dismissed by Kumble. England soon found themselves at 267/7 in the 95th over, before Giles and Andy Caddick added 32 runs for the eighth wicket.
Once Giles was run out by Ganguly and Harbhajan Singh, England folded for 309, slumping to an innings defeat.
