Google CEO Pichai was impressed with the China-based AI model but claims the Gemini AI model is far better in many aspects.

OpenAI has talked about the challenge posed by DeepSeek and how they are impressed by the AI model from China. Now, Google is speaking on the Chinese AI model for the first time, as CEO Sundar Pichai looks to give Gemini some much-needed upgrades to compete with its rivals.
Pichai was speaking during the Q4 earnings call for Alphabet, the parent company, and he also talked highly about DeepSeek and the work done by the team at the Chinese startup in a short time.
Lauds Rivals But Not Giving Up
“I think DeepSeek has a tremendous team. I think they’ve done very, very good work,” Pichai mentioned during the call this month. However, the Google chief was quick to point out the obvious benefits of using Gemini which he claims is far better than DeepSeek in three critical areas.
He even feels that Gemini has the upper hand over DeepSeek because of its cost balance and performance. “If you look at one of the areas in which the Gemini model shines is the Pareto frontier of cost performance in latency.”
Google is claimed to have invested heavily in its AI development over the years and Pichai says those efforts are finally showing their results as the Gemini 2.0 Flash models are more efficient than what the DeepSeek R1 and V3 offer.
The AI battle is surely heating up with the likes of DeepSeek and other AI models coming out of China in recent months. Google and OpenAI have a tough fight on their hands, and their apparent funding into their divisions puts the onus on making the money back in tangible form over the next few years.

Google’s vast pool of resources and manpower will surely give it a big edge over others but the cost factor will eventually come down, making it easier for more players to enter the ring and show their prowess in front of the world.
