Google Drive is getting some useful features and this new addition promises to make searching for content in videos easier.

The caption feature will finally come in handy

Google Drive is getting a new feature this week that is aimed at improving video navigation. The new tool called Video Transcripts builds upon the auto-captioning feature introduced last year. According to the tech giant, users can now browse and search transcripts within videos.

By clicking on the phrase, the video will automatically jump to that exact moment, streamlining the viewing experience. The company announced the feature in its new blog spot. Notably, it will be rolling out for all Google Drive users globally.

“Starting today, Drive users can view and search transcripts for their videos. The transcript is shown in a sidebar next to the video player, highlighting the currently spoken text. This upgrade makes it easier to identify certain moments, follow along with the material, or move right to the part of the video you need,” Google wrote in its blog post.

Additionally, a search bar at the top of the transcript sidebar lets users enter specific terms or phrases. Once a query is entered, the transcript highlights matching sections, and clicking on a text block instantly takes the user to the exact moment in the video.

How It Works

You can try out the new tool by playing a video in Google Drive and ensure it includes automatic captioning. To verify, they can look for the CC button in the bottom right corner of the video player. Once confirmed, clicking the Settings icon will display a new “Transcript” option, which, when selected, opens a side panel for easy navigation.

The feature has been rolled out globally on February 24, 2025, and is expected to reach every user by March 26, 2025. It is accessible to all Google Workspace clients, Google Workspace Individual subscribers, and individuals with personal Google accounts.

This feature enhances user engagement by enabling seamless navigation between text and video content.
