Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) on Monday introduced new legislation that would allow President Donald Trump to negotiate the purchase or other acquisition of Greenland and rename the frigid island “Red, White, and Blueland.”

Carter told The New York Post that “America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland.”

“When our Negotiator-in-Chief signs this historic agreement, we will proudly welcome the people of what is now Greenland to join the freest nation in history. President Trump has rightly identified this purchase as a national security priority.”

The Red, White, and Blueland Act of 2025 provides the secretary of the interior team a six-month deadline to make sure federal documentation is updated with the new name.

The Kingdom of Denmark, which maintains that the island is not for sale, owns Greenland, a place that Trump has long sought to acquire. After winning the 2024 election, Trump reaffirmed his desire to acquire Greenland and has not ruled out using military action to accomplish this.

Notably, despite its name, Greenland is mostly icy while its fellow Arctic island, Iceland, is the greener of the two. Greenland has a population of about 57,000.

Why Trump Wants To Acquire Greenland?

Trump has argued that obtaining Greenland is paramount to the national security interests of the US due to its vast natural resources and access to the Arctic Ocean. Geopolitical experts believe the area will become more valuable over time as it melts.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also defended Trump’s desire of taking Greenland by highlighting US military support for the island territory and a 1951 treaty to defend it in the event of an attack.

Denmark Citizens Launch Campaign Against Trump’s Bid
