Grim week ahead for millions of Australians – what the forecast looks like in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and more

Millions of Australians in the south-east are bracing for frosty mornings, heavy downpours and a chance of thunderstorms over the coming days.

This week conditions are cooler than average for much of Australia and Weatherzone has predicted at least four states and territories could see sub-zero minimum temperatures.

Elevated parts of Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and the ACT are likely to ‘see the grass turn crunchy’ on some or all mornings between Wednesday and Saturday.

This comes as the Bureau of Meteorology warned on Monday there could be a chance of thunderstorms as well as showers in NSW and the ACT.

‘The main story will be this high pressure system dominating weather right across the country,’ meteorologist Dean Narramore said .

‘We will see showers through parts of South Australia, Victoria and NSW and maybe Tasmania as well.’

The system, which is off the south-east coast, has air circulating around it which is expected to push heavy showers onshore.

The rain is not considered serious enough to cause widespread flooding but minor warnings have been issued for NSW and moderates ones for parts of Queensland.

Weatherzone has also forecast a surge of winds and large waves up the NSW coast on Wednesday and Thursday before it moves into South East Queensland on Friday.

This included a hazardous surf warning for Hunter Coast on Wednesday which then extends on Thursday to the Macquarie Coast, Sydney Coast and Illawarra Coast.

Another 100mm has also been predicted along stretches of the NSW coastline as well as strong wind warnings.

Australians in Sydney’s enclosed waters, Byron Coast, Coffs Coast, Macquarie Coast, Hunter Coast, Sydney Coast, Illawarra Coast, Batemans Coast and Eden Coast could all see strong winds later in the week.

There will be ‘virtually no rainfall anywhere else in the country’, Weatherzone said, with most of Australia experiencing stable conditions and light winds.
