Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has boldly claimed that Tottenham Hotspur legend Harry Kane may soon end up on the other side of north London. The England captain severed his career-long ties with Spurs in the summer of 2023 for a move to the Bundesliga. Nearly two years after his high-profile transfer, Merson spoke about Kane’s potential return to England. The ex-midfielder suggested that the prolific striker could move to Arsenal after learning of a supposed £64 million clause in his Bayern Munich contract. “That could be to anywhere? Oh, he’ll be going to Arsenal then. Arsenal will buy him! £64 million,” he told Sky Sports News.

Harry Kane left Tottenham Hotspur as the club’s leading scorer with 280 goals to his name. His move to Bayern Munich was speculated to primarily be fueled by Tottenham’s lack of ability to win any silverware in the last decade. The England international has yet to get his hands on a major trophy with Bavarian giants. It is being speculated that once a gold medal is secured, Kane could be tempted to return to his homeland and as per Paul Merson, Arsenal could be a strong suitor for the striker. “Why not? Sol Campbell did. I mean, if he’s available, you’ve got to weigh it up. For me, it is [a bargain]. People will go ‘Oh, he’s this age, he’s that age’, but Arsenal need now,” the retired Arsenal midfielder said.

Paul Merson explained his claims by comparing Arsenal’s situation with Liverpool. The Sky Sports pundit believed that The Gunners must pounce on every chance they get to acquire a proven striker after failing to lift the Premier League title in recent years. “If Arsenal haven’t won the league, you’ve got to take a chance and find someone who is proven. I wouldn’t be surprised. When you’ve got Harry Kane there and you go ‘right, he can go for £64 million’,” he said. Merson also claimed that there aren’t many teams in England who can afford Kane’s services. “There are only a couple of teams who can buy him. Manchester City aren’t going to buy him, Manchester United and what you heard over the [Mathys] Tel situation, that was worrying that they couldn’t pay the loan deal,” he concluded.

Arsenal have struggled to find a proven goalscorer in the number 9 position. They have been previously linked with several forwards including Alexander Isak, Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres. They still remain in the hunt for a proven goalscorer to lead their attacking line.
