22-year-old opening batter Hasan Nawaz entered his name in the history books on Friday (March 21) by becoming the fastest batter to score a century in T20Is for Pakistan. The right-handed batter achieved the feat by crossing the 100-run mark in 44 balls during the third T20I of the ongoing five-match series between New Zealand and Pakistan at Eden Park in Auckland.
During his stay at the crease so far, Nawaz has hammered 9 fours and 7 sixes so far.
Before Hasan, the record for scoring the fastest T20I century for Pakistan was held by Babar Azam, who, during a T20I match played against South Africa in Centurion on April 14, 2021, crossed the 100-run mark in 49 balls.
Fastest 100s in T20Is for Pakistan
- Hasan Nawaz – 44 balls vs New Zealand (2025)
- Babar Azam – 49 balls vs South Africa (2021)
- Ahmad Shahzad – 58 balls vs Bangladesh (2014)
The overall record for scoring the fastest century in T20Is is held by Estonia batter Sahil Chauhan, who, during a T20I match played against Cyprus in Episkopi on June 17, 2024, crossed the 100-run mark in 27 balls.
PAK won by 9 wickets
Hasan remained unbeaten on 105 runs from 45 balls and helped Pakistan chase down the target of 205 runs in 16 overs for the loss of just one wicket. He added 74 runs for the first wicket with Mohammad Haris (41) and an unbeaten 133 runs for the second wicket with captain Salman Ali Agha, who made 51 runs from 31 balls.
Earlier, New Zealand rode on No. 3 batter Mark Chapman’s 94-run knock to post a total of 204 runs on the board. During his stay at the crease, Chapman smacked 11 fours and 4 sixes but lacked support from other end. He was unlucky to miss out on a well deserving century against the 2009 T20 World Cup winners.
For Pakistan, fast bowler Haris Rauf picked up three wickets for 29 runs in four overs, and two New Zealand batters each were sent back to the pavilion by Shaheen Shah Afridi, Abbas Afridi and Abrar Ahmed.
The win in the third T20I has helped Pakistan keep the ongoing series alive. The fourth T20I between the two teams is scheduled to take place at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Sunday (March 23) and Wellington’s Sky Stadium will host the fifth and final T20I on Wednesday (March 26).
