Amorim, who has had one win in his first four PL outings, expressed his excitement with the United job and his eagerness to take part in his first Mancunian derby.
Premier League side Manchester United travel to the Etihad on Sunday to take on cross-town rivals Manchester City in the Reds boss Ruben Amorim’s first Manchester derby since his arrival to the English shores from Portuguese side Sporting CP.
Amorim, who has had one win in his first four PL outings, expressed his excitement with the United job and his eagerness to take part in his first Mancunian derby.
“I am always looking forward to coaching Manchester United, especially in the derby but we have so much to focus on,” Amorin said.
The 39-year-old emphasised on the importance on continuous development and the variations he would like to see.
“We are focused on improving day by day, and we want to see different things,” the Portuguese added.
United suffered a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal and a 3-2 loss to Nottingham in their previous two PL fixture, with Amorim’s only win in the league, yet coming against Everont as the Red Devils won 4-0.
Amorimg said he liked what he saw from United against Arsenal in the opening period of the game despite his side’s loss to Mikel Arteta’s men.
“I think we did a good job in the first half against Arsenal, so we have that ability, we have players to do it, and we will try to do it again and try to win the game,” he added.
However, Amorim has managed to lead United to back-to-back victories in the UEFA Champions League, the latest a couple of days ago against Viktoria Plezen.
Amorim added that United have to instill a wining culture by notching up a string of triumphs and not get carried away.
“You don’t get carried away about the winning — we should win this type of game that we had Thursday — so now we’re going to another game we need to win,” he said.
“We lost the other two in the Premier League (Arsenal and Nottingham Forest). We have to have this feeling of winning these kind of games, and we will be ready,” he elaborated.
“Of course, we know that we have a lot to improve. A lot of things are changing here but we will fight for the game,” he clarified.
Manchester City are in a rut themselves as head coach Pep Guardiola has had to endure his most difficult period in his glorious coaching career as the PL champions have just a single win in their previous ten outings.
Amorim, who handed Guardiola a 4-1 defeat in his penultimate match as Sporting boss, added that he was focused on the derby against City despite the concerns he has had to address at United.
“I have a huge respect for Manchester City but I’m just focused on Manchester United,” said the Portuguese.
“We have so much to do here, in my mind only this exists,” he added.
“Of course we need to have a strategy, we need to understand the opponent, but my focus is just Manchester United. We just want to improve and to win games,” Amorim concluded.
