As we approach World Health Day on April 7, 2025, the theme “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures” focuses on maternal and newborn health, underscoring the essential role of postnatal care in ensuring healthy lives for both mothers and babies. Dr. Ravi from Amrutanjan Healthcare takes us through it:
The Importance of Postpartum Care and Pain Relief
While most families understandably focus on the care and development of the baby after childbirth, the mother’s postpartum health often takes a back seat. This neglect can lead to complicated health problems for mothers in the weeks and months after delivery.
Postpartum depression has gained significant attention in recent years, yet physical pain experienced by new mothers is often overlooked and dismissed as temporary. However, postpartum pain can persist and, if left unaddressed, may negatively impact both the mother and her ability to care for her baby.
Studies emphasize that postpartum care should be an ongoing process rather than limited to a single post-birth medical visit. Recovery from childbirth demands physical and mental strength, making comprehensive postnatal care critical for mothers adjusting to life with their new babies.
Common Postpartum Pains and Challenges
Postpartum recovery is often accompanied by various physical aches and pains, including back pain due to labor and nursing postures, shoulder and wrist discomfort from holding the baby, and leg and joint pains or stiffness from strained muscles. These unaddressed challenges can hinder a mother’s ability to provide care effectively and may require timely attention for a smoother recovery.
Pain Management – A Lifeline for Postnatal Health
Effective pain management can significantly improve a new mother’s quality of life while enhancing her ability to care for her baby. Drinking plenty of water and consuming iron- and calcium-rich foods promote healing and support breastfeeding. Gentle stretching, pelvic tilts, and walking can alleviate stiffness and improve circulation. Pain-relief solutions like sprays or roll-ons provide localized relief from aches without systemic side effects. Postnatal care is a cornerstone for promoting healing, preventing complications, and ensuring the overall well-being of mothers and their newborns. Addressing postpartum health issues like physical pain and discomfort helps mothers regain strength and build deeper emotional bonds with their newborn babies.
The World Health Day 2025 theme, “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” reinforces the need to prioritize postpartum health as an integral part of maternal care. By taking actionable steps toward pain management, we support mothers as they embrace the joys and challenges of nurturing a new life.
