In earlier times, people commonly used brass and copper utensils for drinking water and cooking food. Meals were prepared on fire furnaces, and everyone enjoyed eating with great enthusiasm. Over time, silver and steel utensils replaced brass and copper, becoming the standard for cooking and serving. However, brass and copper utensils are highly beneficial for health. Cooking in them not only enhances the taste of food but also helps strengthen immunity.

Benefits of Brass and Copper Utensils

Brass is considered to have a warm nature. Eating food or drinking water from brass utensils can help prevent colds and flu and alleviate Kapha dosha. Brass is also beneficial for digestion and other stomach-related issues.

Brass utensils have been crafted in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh for centuries and were once in high demand. However, with changing times, their usage has significantly declined. According to a shopkeeper, Lalluram Kasera, drinking water stored in a brass vessel can kill harmful germs.

If water is left in a brass container overnight and consumed on an empty stomach in the morning, it can boost immunity. Food cooked in brass utensils can protect against serious diseases and promote a cheerful disposition.

Its properties are well-documented in Ayurveda. Despite its advantages, fewer people now use brass utensils in their daily lives.

Need for Government Support

Lallan Maurya, a brass utensil craftsman, noted that the demand for these utensils has drastically reduced over time. Previously, brass items were in high demand, but now they are primarily sought during the wedding season, with minimal interest during the rest of the year. He emphasised that the government needs to step in and support the industry to revive the demand and preserve the tradition of using brass utensils.
