A driver who started seizuring while behind the wheel on a busy highway has been saved by heroic motorists who risked their lives to run after his car.Â
Jeff Benjamin was on his way to work with his wife on Tuesday morning when they noticed a Toyota hatchback suddenly veer across multiple lanes on Auckland’s Northwestern Motorway.Â
‘I don’t think he’s OK,’ Mr Benjamin, whose dashcam was filming, said to his wife.
In footage uploaded to YouTube, Mr Benjamin then signalled for his wife to stop while he got out of the car and ran ahead to try and catch up to the Toyota.
He ran across several lanes before he reached the hatchback and was able to steer it to the safety lane on the side of the highway.
Two tradesmen, who Mr Benjamin said worked with the Toyota driver and happened to be trailing nearby, also ran up the road to try and help.
‘After the dashcam cut we pulled him from the car as it seemed like he wasn’t breathing,’ Mr Benjamin said.  Â
‘Unfortunately he had another seizure, so we had to contain him as best we could to avoid him rolling onto the road.
Several commuters rushed into busy traffic to save the incapacitated driver from crashing

‘As he started coming to, he became quite aggressive. It was a long 15 odd minutes before first responders arrived.’
The driver was taken to hospital but is doing ‘well’, Mr Benjamin said.Â
‘Amazing teamwork from the other people with me, I would have really struggled if they weren’t there,’ he added.
