With nutritional support and scalp care, individuals can better control dandruff and enhance their scalp health during harsh winter seasons.
Dandruff, a common scalp condition, often worsens in winter due to dry air, cold weather, and the frequent use of heating systems, which strip the scalp of moisture. Neglecting proper scalp care, such as infrequent hair washing, can exacerbate the problem. Maintaining a well-balanced diet is essential for controlling and reducing dandruff during this season.
Dr Anumita Pathakk, nutritionist, says, “A well-balanced diet that is rich in all essential nutrients supports scalp health and helps combat dandruff.” It decreases inflammation and gives the skin the omega-3 fatty acids of salmon, mackerel, and chia seeds. Foods containing zinc like oysters, pumpkin seeds, and fortified cereals strengthen immune function and help the skin’s barrier. The best part is that rich Vitamin B foods like leafy greens, whole grains, and beans help a person maintain scalp health while also decreasing irritation.
According to Dr Pathakk, biotin-rich foods such as eggs, yogurt, and carrots are another way to nourish your scalp. Adding antioxidants through berries, nuts, and seeds fight oxidative stress while probiotics in yogurt and kefir help one in keeping gut health in proper balance.
Dr Mohna Chauhan, dermatologist, Prakash Hospital, says one must maintain proper scalp hygiene. “To maintain a healthy scalp, avoid oiling and using hot water for washes as these can worsen the issues. Cleanse your scalp at least thrice a week using effective shampoos, especially containing zinc pyrithione,” says Dr Chauhan. She further advises supplementing hair care with a nutrient-rich diet and consulting a dermatologist for persistent or recurring dandruff issues.
