Don’t let dengue catch you off guard — follow these simple, doctor-approved tips to stay safe and bite-free this season
With rising dengue cases across the country, taking proactive steps to prevent mosquito bites and eliminate breeding grounds is more important than ever.
“As a physician, I see many patients with dengue—a disease that is entirely preventable with the right precautions. Below are essential preventive steps, based on medical guidance, to help keep you and your loved ones safe,” shares Dr. Tushar Tayal, Consultant, Internal Medicine, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram.
1. Clear Breeding Sites
Aedes mosquitoes breed in clean, stagnant water.
Empty and clean water containers (buckets, coolers, flowerpots, etc.) at least once a week.
Properly cover water storage tanks.
Use larvicides in water bodies where drainage isn’t feasible.
2. Wear Protective Clothing
Wear long-sleeved shirts, full-length trousers, and socks, especially during peak mosquito hours (early morning and late afternoon).
Ensure children are dressed in protective clothing throughout the day.
3. Use Mosquito Repellents and Nets
Apply mosquito repellents containing DEET or picaridin to exposed skin.
Sleep under mosquito nets, even during the day—especially for children and the elderly.
Install mesh screens on windows and doors to prevent mosquito entry.
4. Be Cautious During Peak Hours
Aedes mosquitoes are most active two hours after sunrise and two hours before sunset.
Stay indoors during these times, or take extra protective measures if going outside.
5. Support Community Efforts
Participate in local clean-up initiatives.
Report stagnant water or mosquito breeding areas to the authorities.
6. Know the Early Symptoms
Watch for high fever, severe headaches, joint pain, retro-orbital pain (behind the eyes), and skin rashes.
Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear—early treatment is crucial.
7. Prevention Is Key
There is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue.
Maintaining hygiene, raising awareness, and controlling mosquito populations are the most effective ways to prevent the disease.
Dengue prevention isn’t just a personal responsibility—it’s a collective effort. Small actions taken consistently can save lives.
