Humane AI Pin excited people for its new functions, AI platform and more but now the device will shut down after being sold to HP.
The promising AI startup and its AI device will stop working this month.
Humane AI PIN, the device which was supposed to replace smartphones in the next few years, is shutting down later this month. Humane, the company that developed the AI Pin has confirmed that a bid from HP worth $116 million has been accepted for sale, bringing an early end to the much hyped startup.
The figures of the rumoured deal come a year after Humane was looking for buyers for a reported range between $750 million to $1 billion but the new update suggests the AI Pin startup has been bought for a small change.
So Long, Humane AI
Humane AI Pin was sold last year and from the end of February it will stop connecting to the company’s server which makes it unusable. The AI Pin buyers do get refunds but only if they have bought it in the stipulated 90-day window. And in case you purchased the AI Pin sometime in 2024, tough luck.
The Ai Pin device is wearable in two parts: a square device and a battery pack that magnetically attaches to your clothes or other surfaces. In addition to that price, there’s also the $24 monthly fee for a Humane subscription, which gets you a phone number and data coverage through T-Mobile’s network.
Never Stood A Chance
The device had an unpleasant start in the market and failed to impress critics since its launch for its steep price tag. Humane said that the Ai Pin is designed to be more convenient and less distracting than smartphones. Issues started creeping into the device, especially when the company warned people against charging the device and that was probably the end of the product. Now, HP is now going to take the AI-ness of Humane into its own ecosystem and most likely adopt the Humane AI platform into computing products and probably its printers in the years to come.
It is never good to see promising companies wind up like this, even though HP gains access to the technology but Humane did not go enough to succeed in a market where AI is growing but surely did not need a hardware that too as a phone replacement.
