Star India and Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Abhishek Sharma’s father Raj Kumar has admitted that he has always thought that his son wouldn’t perform well if he was in the stands and the same thought came back to haunt him when Abhishek was dismissed early in his innings, only to survive off the no-ball.

It is superstition that has left Raj Kumar hesitant through the years, until Saturday evening in Hyderabad, when he watched Abhishek‘s carnage to set up his team’s victory over the Punjab Kings.

Speaking to The Times of India after the game, Raj Kumar revealed that it was the first time he had ever watched Abhishek in action in an Indian Premier League match in a stadium.

“I am superstitious. I used to think he wouldn’t do well if I was there. Even last night, when he was dismissed off a no-ball, for those 30 seconds, I started blaming myself. Then the sixes started landing among the crowd,” Raj Kumar said.

Hyderabad and Abhishek didn’t have a good start to IPL 2025. After a victory over the Rajasthan Royals in their first match, they lost four on the trot to reel at the bottom of the points table.

“He (Abhishek) booked the tickets. I was a bit hesitant to go. But then he called and convinced me to fly to Hyderabad,” Raj Kumar said.

Abhishek’s mother believes that after Hyderabad’s victory over Punjab, he will continue in this form for the rest of the season.

“Sab ko Khush hai, ma ko bhi Khushi hai, pure Hyderabad ko Khushi hai ki hum match jeete hai (Everyone is happy, I am happy too. The entire of Hyderabad is celebrating the fact that we won the match). Thoda stop lag gaya tha lekin ab nahi lagega, ab continue chalega (There was a lean patch, but now the team will continue to do well),” Manju said in a video posted by IPL.
