Mourinho felt that Bright Osayi-Samuel was denied a penalty after a challenge by Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte. But the decision did not go in Fenerbahce’s favour and it left Mourinho absolutely disappointed. The Portuguese manager took his objection too far and as a result, he was dismissed by French referee Clement Turpin.
Recalling the decision to not give a penalty, Jose Mourinho told TNT, as per Sky Sports, “I watched the incident. I don’t want to speak about it.” While talking about going to see the match referee, Mourinho said, “He told me something incredible. At the same time, he could see the action in the box and my behaviour on the touchline. I congratulate him because he’s absolutely incredible. During the game, at 100 miles per hour, he had one eye on the penalty situation, and he had one eye on the bench and on my behaviour. That’s the explanation he gave me. That’s why he is one of the best referees in the world.”
Last year, Jose Mourinho was handed a four-match touchline ban for his behaviour around the Europa League final where his former side Roma were defeated by Sevilla. This time, Jose Mourinho had to watch the remainder of the fixture from the stands as Fenerbahce claimed a point against Manchester United in the Europa League.
Manchester United’s Christian Eriksen scored the opening goal of the game. Eriksen found the back of the net in the 15th minute. Fenerbahce secured an equaliser when Youssef En-Nesyri netted a goal early in the second half. The result meant that Manchester United have now drawn all three of their European games this season.
A draw with Fenerbahce left Manchester United at the 21st position in the 36-team standings in the Europa League. Manchester United will next face West Ham United in the Premier League this weekend. Meanwhile, Fenerbahce find themselves placed at the 14th spot having claimed five points in the Europa League.
