The 40-year-old developed a staph infection that led to the ordeal. And after weeks of battling for his life, he opened up on the challenges he had to endure, most of which he recollected only from his wife’s journal entries.

Askren revealed that his heart stopped beating intermittently multiple times over during the odyssey, but the doctors were able to save the MMA artist thanks to timely measures.
“I basically died four times,” Asken said.
“My heart stopped for 20 seconds. Not ideal, I don’t know if you guys know that,” the 40-year-old continued.

Askren has also lost a considerable amount of weight in the process and revealed that he only has a blurred memory of the entire month of June.
“I haven’t been this light since high school wrestling. That’s crazy,” he added.
Askren underwent the procedure at a hospital in Wisconsin, where he continues his rehabilitation after doctors deemed it absolutely crucial in his road to recovery.
