IKEA, the Swedish furniture giant, is set to launch its e-commerce services in Delhi-NCR and nine other cities across north India, including locations in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, starting March 1. This move follows the recent inauguration of IKEA’s distribution center in Gurugram, which will enable same-day deliveries within Delhi-NCR.
Seven years after entering the Indian market, IKEA is expanding its online services to regions such as Agra, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ludhiana, Prayagraj, and Varanasi, in addition to Delhi-NCR.
To date, IKEA has onboarded 1 lakh members from Delhi-NCR into its loyalty program, accounting for around 4% of its 27 lakh total loyalty members across India. The company anticipates a significant increase in memberships from Delhi-NCR and northern India in the near future.
The north Indian market is poised to become IKEA’s largest market in India, and its online business, which currently makes up 30% of its revenue, is expected to drive deeper market penetration, according to Adosh Sharma, IKEA India’s country commercial manager.
Previously, IKEA’s deliveries were limited to just five states—Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Gujarat—while its offline presence covered Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Navi Mumbai.
IKEA plans to tailor its product offerings for Delhi, recognizing the city’s larger living spaces, gardens, and balconies compared to markets like Mumbai, which favor multifunctional furniture due to space constraints. “Outdoors, celebrations, and multi-generational families are prominent in Delhi, which is why we are focusing on curating our range to meet those needs,” Sharma noted.
IKEA will also offer third-party assembly services, as customer service remains a critical factor, especially in the northern regions of India. Additionally, the company is exploring the possibility of smaller format stores in Delhi, where large plots of land are scarce or expensive. These smaller stores will complement the upcoming Gurugram and Noida locations.
“Our goal is ‘one click, 30 minutes away,’ meaning we will always be available online, and there will always be a physical touchpoint within 30 minutes of our customers,” Sharma explained. In partnership with Rhenus Logistics, IKEA is supporting its expansion into Delhi-NCR with a 1.5-lakh-sq ft warehouse in Gurugram, which will handle deliveries using electric vehicles (EVs).
IKEA’s first offline store in Delhi-NCR is expected to open in Gurugram by 2026, featuring over 2 lakh sq ft of retail space and a 1,000-seater restaurant offering both Indian and Swedish cuisine. Meanwhile, construction of the Noida store, which began in September 2024 with the laying of the foundation by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is scheduled for completion by 2028.
