A gay Republican politician slammed the left for ‘creating hysteria’ during a city council meeting aimed at naming Worcester, Massachusetts, a ‘sanctuary’ for transgender people.
Alexander Hagerty, 30, the first openly gay State Committeeman in Massachusetts, said he is ‘sick and tired’ of Democrats who are using ‘scare tactics’ fueled by misinformation to further their agendas.
‘The left are creating hysteria,’ Hagerty exclusively told DailyMail.com.
‘That is what the Democratic party has come down to these days, scare tactics and misinformation.’
Hagerty expressed his ‘disappointment’ following a charged Worcester City Council meeting that saw a group of activists, some of whom were dressed head-to-toe in drag, speak before the council in an attempt to lobby Worcester into becoming a ‘sanctuary city’ for transgender and ‘gender diverse’ people.
One of the attendees, who was wearing a blue wig and exaggerated drawn-on eyebrows and white gloves, even threatened violence at the impassioned meeting.
‘If you say that you’re afraid of Trump and that’s why you don’t want the city to be a safe space for trans people… you better prepare for trans people to make this a very unsafe space,’ the attendee said.
Another called the council ‘pathetic’ while expressing their opinions through angered yelling: ‘Can you look at me and tell me how many of my friends need to die before you do anything? Look at me! F***ing pathetic!’

Hagerty, formerly a town selectman in nearby Abington, was appalled at the behavior of the group seeking ‘sanctuary,’ claiming people are ‘sick and tired’ of getting other’s identities ‘shoved in their faces’.
‘A lot of what I saw in my own campaigning is that people are sick and tired of people shoving their identities in other’s faces,’ he said.
Haggerty added that Worcester – and the entire state of Massachusetts – has always been ‘very accepting of the gay and trans community’.
‘As an openly gay man, I am fortunate to live in America. LGBTQ+ are the most safe in America. I mean, the fifth in-line for the President’s seat [Scott Bessent] is an openly gay man with kids! Doesn’t that say enough?’
The council voted, 9 to 2, in favor of the city becoming a safe heaven for trans people as well as those who are ‘gender diverse’.
However, even as the resolution has passed, Hagerty called the ordinance ‘redundant’ as a resolution is ‘is merely an acknowledgement, and has no legal ramifications.’
‘I think the passing of the resolution is redundant,’ he said, adding, ‘Massachusetts has been very accepting of the gay and trans community.
‘Massachusetts was the first state to grant same sex marriage,’ he added.
Because the resolution does not have any ‘legal ramifications,’ according to Hagerty, nothing has changed for the ‘gender-diverse’ group as the Republican politician claims the fiery acts were an attempt to get ‘famous.’

The resolution was passed after the council’s first openly nonbinary member, Thu Nguyen, said they were taking a hiatus from the council because the environment in the ultra liberal council was transphobic. Pictured: An attendee speaks before the Worcester City Council
‘What protections do trans individuals have that they didn’t have two weeks ago?’ he asked before explaining, ‘I think these days everyone wants to be famous – everyone wants a participation trophy.’
Hagerty added that he believes the outrageous acts were due to a combination of reasons.
‘I think a lot of the outburst seen at the city council meeting came at the heels of the city councilperson’s claims about being deliberately misgendered, almost using transphobia as a crutch,’ he admitted.
Hagerty referenced a January incident in which an elected official, Thu Nguyen, who uses they/them pronouns, accused some of their fellow Worcester City Council members of deliberately misgendering them and referring to them as ‘it’.
Nguyen garnered a citywide response after they demanded an immediate investigation into what they described as a ‘toxic political culture’ and called out several lawmakers by name in a statement on Instagram.

However, Nguyen’s colleagues have since claimed that any misgendering was accidental and suggested that they had only made the transphobia claims after they were challenged over their poor attendance record and ordered to return to in-person meetings.
The heated Tuesday meeting has since garnered national attention with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham discussing the meeting on her show on Thursday.
‘This group last night, they put up such a fit,’ Boston-area radio host, Jim Polito, said appearing on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle on Thursday. ‘Actually, they were the most intolerant. They were threatening violence.’
Polito harped on the disgraceful acts put on by the sanctuary-seeking activists as he described another event in which a meeting attendee used racial slurs against one of the two councilmen who voted against the resolution.
‘Two of the counselors who voted no, one happens to be Jewish. The tolerant crowd here who was looking for acceptance started yelling at him with a fake German accent. They called him a fascist. And they started making pig noises “oink, oink.”

Polito went on to explain that the targeted councilperson’s parents were Holocaust survivors who moved to Worcester in 1949.
‘This is out of control,’ he added. ‘I grew up in Worcester, I don’t live there anymore. It used to be a blue collar city, it is no longer that.’

The activist-led outrage comes after Trump completed his electoral campaign promise to order the federal government to acknowledge only two genders – male and female.
The 47th President issued an executive order on the day his second term began that called for ‘restoring biological truth to the federal government’ and signed another on Wednesday titled ‘Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports.’
Before his elections, at least 23 states had already either banned or restricted gender-affirming care.
