Tottenham Hotspur may be a running joke in football, but Ange Postecoglou refuses to be looked upon as a ‘clown’.

The Spurs boss angrily defended his pride and terrible record at Tottenham this season ahead of Wednesday’s Europa League final in a fiery exchange.

Spurs face yet another jokingly bad Manchester United side in the Europa League final in Bilbao with a chance to win their first trophy for 17 years.

The Australian, whose side is 17th in the Premier League — a place below United — has been under intense scrutiny over the past couple of months, with Postecoglou taking the brunt of it all.

Win or lose in Bilbao, many are of the firm mindset that Ange’s time in Tottenham is running out.

When asked at his pre-match press conference whether Postecoglou is aware of how he’s finely treading the line between infamy and hilarity, the Spurs boss clapped back with vengeance.

“That depends on your outlook, but I’ll tell you one thing, irrespective of tomorrow, I’m not a clown and never will be,” he said, directly addressing a reporter who had called him so in an article.

“You really disappointed me that you used such terminology to describe a person that, for 26 years, without any favours from anyone, has worked his way to a position where he is leading out a club in a European final.

“For you to suggest that somehow us not being successful means that I’m a clown, I’m not sure how to answer that question.”

Success might not have been achieved so far, but the Australian emphasised the effort he’s put in to hopefully rejuvenate a Tottenham side that has won no silverware since 2008.

“I’ve tried as hard as I can to stick to that process in getting the club to a position where they can challenge for trophies and at the same time, rejuvenate the squad and change the playing style,” he said.

“It has been a fair assignment with plenty of challenges along the way.”

“With such a big game tomorrow, there is an opportunity to fulfil at least the main task I was given, which was to bring trophies to the club.”

With everything to play for, including their pride, Postecoglou and Ruben Amorim will push their respective sides to leave it all out on the pitch, in one last hope to save face after their tragic domestic seasons.
