On August 15, 1947, India awoke to the light of freedom, breaking the chains of over two centuries of British colonial rule. It was a defining moment in history, marked by the country’s long-awaited “tryst with destiny,” as eloquently declared by independent India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in his iconic midnight speech. That day, as Nehru hoisted the tricolour for the first time, a new chapter began for a nation rising from oppression into sovereignty.

Since then, Independence Day has been observed with formal celebrations across the country. The sitting Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi and addresses the nation, remembering the immense courage and sacrifice of the freedom fighters and leaders who shaped India’s struggle for independence.

Educational institutions across India commemorate the day by organising cultural performances, flag hoisting, and interactive workshops that highlight the freedom movement, instil patriotic values, and honour the spirit of the Constitution. The day serves as both a remembrance and a celebration of India’s hard-won liberty and its ongoing journey as a democratic republic.
