Ted Sarandos on People by WTF: Why India Is Netflix’s Most Exciting Frontier Yet
Netflix CEO Ted Sarando
Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos recently sat down with Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath for an episode of the People by WTF podcast, which dropped over the weekend. In the candid conversation, Sarandos spoke about Netflix’s global journey, India’s growing significance in the company’s strategy, and why the country could shape the future of entertainment.
Talking about the potential and future of Indian entertainment, Ted shared, “For 10 years, I’ve heard that India is two years away. And I feel like it’s never been more true than right now. It feels like India is on the precipice of something very big, and these are probably the most exciting times I’ve witnessed in India’s history.”
He further added what’s working for Netflix in India, “From Japanese anime to all kinds of different things that you would not expect to work well in India — they work very well. The audience here is very hungry for diverse storytelling from around the world. They love Bollywood, they love South Indian action movies for sure, but they are far more adventurous as viewers than I expected.”
In the nearly two-hour conversation, Ted reflects on the power of local storytelling, India’s global impact, and why culture travels better than ever. He and Nikhil dive into insider stories, career learnings, and the evolving landscape of global content — from Ted’s dinner with Shah Rukh Khan to Netflix’s bets on gaming, tech integration, and bold creative choices. It’s a masterclass in leadership, storytelling, and what’s next for entertainment in India and beyond.
