The scenic ground at Headingley, Leeds, hosts the first Test of the marquee India-England Test series from Friday, June 20. Ben Stokes’ England takes on the in-transition but spirited Indian side led by Shubman Gill in what promises to be an entertaining series.
Both the teams will be eyeing a successful start to the new cycle of the ICC World Test Championship after missing out on the final at Lord’s, where South Africa were famously crowned champions last week.
England and India will be contesting the five-Test series for the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy, named after two of the greatest cricketers to have ever graced the cricket field: Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar and England’s leading wicket-taker James Anderson.
The series marks a new chapter for Indian cricket following the retirements of some of their greats as Gill’s inexperienced unit carries the mantle forward from Virat Kohli, R Ashwin and Rohit Sharma, whose retirement in May led to his young successor’s appointment at the helm.
For England, skipper Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum will have to revisit the batting combination. Despite Ollie Pope scoring a massive hundred against the Zimbabweans last month, doubts continue to hover over the edgy right-hander’s spot and suitability at No.3. especially as in-form Jacob Bethell makes a return to the squad following his absence at Trent Bridge.
IND Vs ENG Headingley Pitch Report
One of the toughest grounds to conquer for visiting sides in England, the pitch at Headingley offers pacers significant enough seam movement with the Dukes ball that also moves laterally. It has been a dry English summer, and the curator has hinted that a flat surface will be on offer with some help for the fast bowlers in the opening two days.
Headingley Weather Forecast
Expect a cloudy sky on Day 1 of the contest. There’s forecast of showers through remaining days. Temperature will range from 17 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius.
