Indian-origin nurse Achamma Cherian was stabbed with a pair of scissors at a Manchester hospital. The 57-year-old was attacked by a patient in his 30s while she was on duty at the acute medical unit in Oldham Royal Hospital in Greater Manchester. Achamma Cherian is in critical condition while the accused has been arrested.

Achamma Cherian has been working at the hospital for almost ten years, The Sun reported. She lives close to the hospital and neighbours told the outlet that the nurse regularly worked the night shifts. One said, “She’s lived here since we moved here in 2007.”

The accused- identified as Mohammed Roman Haque- appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court and was charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article. The accused attacked Achamma Cherian as he was “angry” about having to wait for a medical assessment, it was reported.

UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting condemned the incident on X (formerly Twitter) stating, “Nurses are the backbone of our NHS and should be able to care for patients without fear of violence.” Local government minister Oldham West MP Jim McMahon termed the incident “a senseless attack.”
