Para-javelin throw athlete Mahendra Gurjar registered a world record throw of 61.17m at the Nottwil World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Switzerland on Monday to clinch the top spot in the event.

The 27-year-old Indian smashed the previous record held by Brazil’s Roberto Floriani Edenilson, who posted a throw of 59.19m in the year 2022.

Gurjar’s WR attempt was sandwiched between his initial two attempts of 56.11m and 55.51m and his final three efforts of 58.54m, 57.25m and 58.07m in the F42 section — a category for athletes with moderately affected movement in one leg.

Gurjar competed in an event that combined para-athletes of F40, F57, F63 and F64 together.

“It was a combined event with para-athletes of other classifications competing in it. Gurjar won gold in F42 and also a world record in the same classification,” Gurjar’s coach Samarjeet Singh Malhi said.

“It is normal practice for para athletes of different classifications competing in a combined event,” he added.

“Besides javelin, we have started long jump also. It’s his first competition in long jump T42 and he will be the Asia number one after this gold,” the coach added.
