Dr Sonia Rawat, Director of the Preventive Health and Wellness Department at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, explains that Indian toilets were traditionally more common in the country, but the use of Western toilets has now become widespread.

The Indian toilet requires a squatting position, which helps straighten the rectum, making bowel movements easier and more complete. This posture allows the pelvic muscles to work more effectively and reduces pressure on the intestines. According to her, using the Indian toilet can also support better digestion.

Dr Rawat further explained that although the sitting position of a Western toilet is more comfortable, it keeps the rectum slightly bent, which can prevent complete elimination of stool. This posture may contribute to constipation, piles, or other related issues.

However, for those who have difficulty squatting, due to joint pain, knee issues, or old age, the Western toilet remains a more practical option.

The health expert added that even when using a Western toilet, constipation can be managed. Placing a small stool under the feet can raise the knees slightly and help the body mimic a squatting position. This simple method can ease bowel movements.

Whether you use an Indian or Western toilet, the key is to maintain a body posture that supports proper bowel function. Constipation is not only linked to diet but also to the position in which we relieve ourselves.
