Amid circulating rumours on social media, the government on Saturday clarified that Indian workers in Israel are not being forced to return home, dismissing the claims as “fake.”

The Indian Embassy in Israel said that the ongoing registration drive for Indian nationals is to enable the Embassy to reach out to them in the time of crisis and help them avail various welfare schemes of the Government of India.

“A message circulating on social media claiming Indian workers in Israel would be forced to return to India or face jail/fine if they register with the Embassy of India is fake,” the Indian Embassy wrote in an X post on Saturday.

“Do not believe or forward such misinformation,” it said, further urging the people to “always rely on official updates from @Indemtel (Embassy of India, Tel Aviv) for accurate info.”

West Asia Tensions

The clarification comes as tensions in West Asia escalate with Israel and Iran exchanging multiple attacks in recent days, resulting in numerous casualties.

The situation worsened following Israel’s strikes on Iranian targets under ‘Operation Rising Lion’, to which Iran responded with retaliatory action.

Against this backdrop, the Indian Embassy last week issued a separate advisory for Indians residing in Israel, urging them to remain alert, avoid unnecessary movement, and follow local safety instructions issued by Israeli authorities.

Thousands of Indian community members are employed in Israel, with some working in professional desks of diamond trading and IT and others doing a gig job.

According to an NDTV report, following the outbreak of the Gaza war in 2023, efforts have intensified to recruit Indian workers for construction jobs in Israel, aiming to replace the tens of thousands of Palestinian labourers who were barred from entering the country after the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023.

Meanwhile, India launched Operation Sindhu to evacuate its nationals from Iran amid growing tensions in the region.
