Infosys Layoffs: After complaints received from PMO, the Union labour and employment ministry has again issued a letter to the Karnataka Labour Commissioner, urging intervention in the layoffs of trainees at Infosys’ Mysuru campus.

Earlier this month, Infosys faced a backlash after it laid off over 300 freshers who underwent foundational training at its Mysuru campus but could not clear internal assessments.

Infosys Layoffs: Over 100 Infosys trainees who were sacked recently by N R Narayana Murthy-led IT major after they failed an assessment test have approached the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) over their dismissal and sought the PMO’s intervention for job restoration. In a letter to the PMO, Infosys’ sacked employees also urged the PMO to take measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

After these complaints, the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment has again issued a letter to the Karnataka Labour Commissioner, urging intervention in the layoffs of trainees at Infosys’ Mysuru campus.

“You are requested to look into the matter and take necessary action, keeping both the applicant and this office informed,” according to the letter dated February 25, according to Moneycontrol.

Earlier this month, India’s second largest IT services company faced a backlash after it laid off over 300 freshers who underwent foundational training at its Mysuru campus but could not clear internal assessments.

The trainees after a two-year wait had been onboarded just a few months ago in October 2024.

IT employee union NITES had sought urgent intervention of Ministry of Labour and Employment urging authorities to take strict action against the company.

“Various complaints which are received by this office address to PMO are enclosed herewith. The applicants are requesting the intervention of the Ministry of Labour & Employment to ensure their reinstatement in employment and to prevent similar unfair dismissals from happening to other employees in the future,” the central government’s labour ministry said in a letter dated February 25.

NITES Threatens Protests

Pune-based IT workers union NITES has said it will not hesitate to start a protest along with trainees, who were laid off recently by Infosys, if the government does not take “appropriate” action.

Infosys said that every trainee joins with full understanding that performance evaluations are key part of their progress, and asserted that all eligible trainees (over 98 per cent) have received their relieving letter upon separation, along with outplacement services, severance pay, counselling, among other measures.

Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) in a statement on Wednesday said, “…we will continue to stand with these employees until they receive the fairness and dignity they deserve. Today we are politely requesting the authorities for justice, but if the government will not take appropriate measures then NITES along with all the employees will not hesitate to start a massive protest outside Infosys campus.” NITES emphasised it is imperative that immediate action is taken to address “this injustice” and added “those responsible must be held accountable for their actions”.
