Young Priyansh Arya and Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis played probably the best knocks of their IPL careers on Monday (May 26) to help Punjab Kings defeat star-studded Mumbai Indians by 7 wickets in Jaipur. A big win over the five-time champions secured the Shreyas Iyer-led side’s place in the first qualifier of IPL 2025, and they are now guaranteed to finish in the top two of the points table.

In the penultimate league match of this year’s IPL at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, the Punjab-based franchise chased down the target of 185 runs in 18.3 overs for the loss of just three wickets. Captain Shreyas Iyer (27 from 16 balls) sealed the deal for his team by hitting Trent Boult for a six.

Priyansh – the left-handed batter from Delhi, who was signed for Rs 3.80 crore by the Preity Zinta co-owned side in the mega auction last year – hammered the Mumbai Indians to all corners of the ground for fun during his 35-ball-62 in the 185-run chase.

The left-handed batter completed his half-century in 27 balls and smacked nine fours and two sixes during his stay at the crease. He was ably supported by Inglis (73), who helped PBKS cross the 100-run mark in the run chase by hitting Ashwani Kumar for a hat-trick of fours in the 11th over and completed his maiden IPL fifty in 29 balls with the help of five fours and three sixes.

The duo added 109 runs from 59 balls for the second wicket after Priyansh added 34 runs in 4.2 overs for the first wicket with Prabhsimran Singh (13 runs from 16 balls).

Ace fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was the standout performer for the Mumbai Indians with the ball, and Mitchell Santner picked up two wickets, but they lacked support from the likes of Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, Hardik Pandya and Ashwani Kumar.

In the first qualifier of IPL 2025 on Thursday (May 29), PBKS will face Gujarat Titans or Royal Challengers (if they manage to beat LSG on Tuesday) in Mullanpur, and MI will be up against the third-placed team in the eliminator match at the same venue on Friday (May 30).

Earlier, Suryakumar Yadav scored his second fifty (59) in a row to help MI post 184/7. The 34-year-old right-handed batter came out to bat at No. 3 after Ryan Rickelton (27 from 20 balls) and Rohit Sharma (24 from 21 balls) added 45 runs for the first wicket in 5.1 overs and hammered six fours and two sixes.

During his 39-ball stay at the crease, which ended on the last ball of MI’s innings, Suryakumar broke multiple batting records.

He first became the first Mumbai Indians batter to score 600 runs in multiple IPL seasons and then created the world record of scoring 25+ scores (14) in a row in T20s.

He also broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most runs in an IPL season for the Mumbai Indians and Sanath Jayasuriya’s record of most sixes by an MI batter in one IPL season.

In 14 matches of IPL 2025, Surya has 642 runs and 33 sixes to his name, whereas Tendulkar amassed a total of 618 runs in 2010, and Jayasuriya smacked 31 maximums in the inaugural edition.

For the five-time champions, apart from Tilak Varma, who got out for one off four balls, others played short but impactful knocks.

Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen and Vijaykumar Vyshak finished with two wickets each on Monday, whereas Rohit was sent back to the pavilion by Harpreet Brar.
