Gary Neville has hailed Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak as the best striker in the English top flight. The Swedish star showcased his talent in his team’s league clash against Manchester United on December 30.
Blown away by his display, the former United defender claimed the 25-year-old was constantly improving his game. “Isak’s movement and the quality of his play – he’s absolutely fantastic. He’s improving all the time,” he said on The Gary Neville Podcast, via TBR Football.
Alexander Isak ran through Manchester United’s defences on Tuesday, helping Newcastle United win 2-0 at Old Trafford. Isak gave his side the breakthrough with a sublime finish in the fourth minute. Talking about the 25-year-old’s qualities, Neville further said, “We know he can score goals, he can run, but also his hold-up play and link with others I think he’s got better and better the more he’s been at Newcastle.”
Gary Neville was so impressed by Alexander Isak, that he described the Swedish star’s game as ‘far superior’ compared to Manchester City forward Erling Haaland.
“We threw back to the studio, Dave Jones asked Jamie Carragher if he was the best striker in the Premier League, at this moment, I think he is. Purely because you watch Erling Haaland a lot and he’s a world-class striker but his general play is nothing like Isak’s at this moment in time,” he added.
Alexander Isak has been in top form for Newcastle United in the 2024/25 season. He arrived at St James Park in 2022 from Real Sociedad for a reported fee of £63 million. In just two years, the Swede has established himself as one of the best players in England. The youngster has played 20 matches this season, scoring 13 times and providing four assists. In total, Isak has made 87 appearances in a Newcastle United shirt while bagging 48 goals and nine assists.
Erling Haaland, on the other hand, has been far from his absolute best this season. Despite Manchester City’s struggles, the Norway international has scored 19 goals in 26 appearances but his overall game has been pretty poor this season. He will next feature in his team’s upcoming clash against West Ham at the Etihad whereas Alexander Isak and company will take on a struggling Tottenham Hotspur on away turf. Both Haaland and Isak hope to better their numbers in the weekend fixtures.
