A senior Hezbollah political official survived an assassination attempt on the night of October 10, Reuters reported, citing anonymous security sources. Wafiq Safa was reportedly the target as Israeli fighter jets bombed a densely-packed neighbourhood in the heart of Beirut.Safa reportedly managed to elude the attack on a third-floor apartment near central Beirut. The Israeli attack killed at least 22 people and injured 117 others, Lebanon’s health ministry said.Lebanese medical sources estimated that the toll was likely to rise as search and rescue operations continued. Many people have come from the southern suburbs of Beirut and are sheltering in the densely packed neighbourhoods in central Beirut. The Israeli military did not issue an evacuation order before carrying out the strike, as per reports. Most Israeli attacks have been concentrated in Beirut’s Dahiyeh, a Hezbollah stronghold in the city’s southern suburbs. The IDF did not immediately comment on the strikes, which appeared to mark the deadliest attacks in the centre of the Lebanese capital.
