It has been nothing but painful for Tottenham Hotspur so far this season, and midfielder James Maddison revealed how the entire team has been affected by the same. Yet, Spurs stay motivated to ‘reward’ the fans with the Europa League title.

Languishing at an abysmal 16th in the PL and having secured only one win since the end of February, Ange Postecoglou’s side have had nothing go their way this season.

Coupled with the fact that this marks the first time Tottenham have made it so far into the Europa League since 1984, Spurs come across as sitting ducks that merely somehow let the tide of the river take them this deep into the tournament.

Fans have undoubtedly voiced their hurt over the dismal season, and Maddison wants to do right by their loyal supporters and bring home Tottenham’s first trophy since 2008.

“It hurts me a lot that we’re having a poor season,” said the England midfielder.

“But this is why we’re so motivated for this competition, because the season can still be so special. People talk all the time about Tottenham being without silverware for however many years, but we’re in the last four, and we’ve got a great opportunity in a competition we’ve been pretty solid in this year. We want to reward them because we feel the support.”

A spirited Maddison also highlighted the undying support that Spurs receive from their loyal supporters even through the absolute worst of times.

“At the end of games and you’ve lost again, you go over and you want to thank them for the support, and I know they don’t want to hear it from us. Even this press conference and the interview on Sunday, they’re not really that bothered because words are just words. But it hurts, and we’re trying to put it right.

“That’s the main thing, that hunger is there. It doesn’t always work how you want it to, but this is a unique situation that we’re in, in the last four in Europe, when we can go and reward them for their support because they do travel everywhere. We are very grateful for that. Even in the league position we’re in and we’ve got nothing to play for, they’re still selling out Liverpool away.”

Spurs host the Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final on Thursday after suffering a record-equalling 19th league defeat at Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

It is going to be quite the challenge for a depleted and demotivated Spurs to take on the wildcard Norwegians, who are on the hunt to cap off their magical breakthrough season at on top. But, one that Postcoglou’s side shall look to take on with all they’ve got, nonetheless.
