Premier League holders Manchester City conceded a surprise defeat at Brighton on Saturday to fall five points behind table toppers Liverpool going into the November International break.
The defeat at the Amex Stadium marked Pep Guardiola’s fourth straight defeat across competitions, the first time ever the Spaniard has experienced such a flurry of defeats.
However, the Manchester City boss opined that such is the nature of the sport and he does not expect it to be any different for him at the helm. He reflected on his playing days and stated that his City side are no exceptions to the uncertain nature of the sport.
“I was a football player and many times I lost a lot of games — four in a row, five in a row, six in a row,” Guardiola said.
“I never expect different, the fact we won in the past, that we are special. People can believe that but it’s not true,” the Spaniard added.
City have been plagued by multiple injuries to star players this season hampering their consistency.
“We are not consistent enough to maintain this level that helped us to win what we want for many years,” said Guardiola.
The 53-year-old, however, did not rule out a fightback in the title race, but also added that they would pick up on learnings if a turnaround falls flat.
“Hopefully in the future we’ll come back, and if we don’t come back we’ll learn from that,” he added.
City found themselves in a similar situation in the previous campaign before clawing their way back to the top, before eventually finishing the season with the coveted piece of PL silverware.
“Don’t be complacent when you win a lot, know how difficult it is,” said Guardiola.
“That makes us believe how difficult it was and how nice it will be when we win again,” he added.
“Right now we are not at our best, it’s obvious. But still it’s November so hopefully we’ll come back step by step,” the City gaffer continued.
“Every game will be tough for every team. We’ll recover our best and then we’ll see,” he concluded.
