PSV conceded a harsh 1-2 defeat at the hands of Juventus in Turin on Wednesday in the first leg of the fixture between the sides for a place in the revamped UEFA Champions League Round Of 16. A late winner from Juve youngster Samuel Mbangula in the 82nd minute of the game gave the hosts the win against the travelling Dutchmen after Ivan Perisic had cancelled out Weston Mckennie’s first-half opener.
PSV gaffer Peter Bosz felt the result was a hard pill to swallow, but acknowledged that games of such stature could be decided on the minor details.
“I think it’s a shame, I didn’t think it was necessary to lose,” PSV coach Bosz said following the defeat in Italy.
“Why did it happen? Because it’s a top match and these kinds of game usually turn on small details,” the Dutchman explained.
“And we came up short on two or three of them,” he acknowledged.
Bosz opined that his team settled down well after the initial exchanges of the game and could have gone on to win it had they capitalised on the chances they let slip, which ultimately cost them the game.
“I think it was an unnecessary loss,” added Bosz.
“We had a hard time in the first five minutes but after that I thought we had a grip on the match. We dared to play football and the first big chance came our way,” the 61-year-old said.
“We scored a great goal to make the score 1-1. Then it’s a shame that you give it away like this,” the PSV boss added.
PSV goalie Walter Benitez’s parry towards the end of the game ended up at the feet of the 21-year-old Belgian youngster Mbangula who had come off the bench to net his side’s winner.
Bosz lauded the efforts of 36-year-old Croatian Perisic, who put in a shift and also had a goal to show for his contributions in the first leg at Turin, before the sides square up against each other yet again on the 19th of February at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven for the return leg of the fixture.
“I think what he showed was very special. Not only because he scored, but I think was a very well-taken goal,” the PSV head coach added.
