Scientists have finally declared Earth safe from a newly discovered asteroid – but it might hit the Moon.

After two months of observations, Nasa and the European Space Agency yesterday virtually ruled out any threat from 2024 YR4.

At one point, the odds of a strike in 2032 were as high as 3 per cent.

After two months of observations, Nasa and the European Space Agency virtually ruled out any threat from asteroid 2024 YR4

But the ESA has since lowered the risk to 0.001 per cent, with Nasa putting it at 0.0027 per cent.

However, there is still a 1.7 per cent chance the asteroid could hit the Moon on December 22 2032, Nasa still warns.

The world’s telescopes will continue to track the rock – which could measure up to 300ft across – as it heads away from Earth, and it swings towards us every four years.
