French forward Ousmane Dembele admitted that he couldn’t pick Paris Saint-Germain over Lionel Messi’s Barcelona when asked about the best team he has played for. The 27-year-old will be in action for PSG during their upcoming Champions League quarter-final clash against Aston Villa on April 16. Ahead of the big match, Dembele was asked how PSG compares to his previous clubs, including Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona. The winger hesitated to name a clear favourite. “I don’t know if this PSG is the best team I’ve played for, because I played at Barça with Lionel Messi, who for me is the greatest player of all time,” he said, according to RMC Sport.
Before refusing to choose his favourite club, Dembele claimed he had represented multiple good teams in his career. “I’ve played for some good teams, and I remember Rennes was also a good team,” he initially said with a smile. Dembele, however, later conceded he was having the most fun at the French capital. “It’s [PSG] one of the teams where I enjoy the most,” he revealed.
According to Dembele, Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain had what was needed to become European champions. “The team has a lot of personality and doesn’t give up until the last minute. The coach tells us to always believe in it. Whether it’s the youngsters or the older players, we give everything until the last minute. That’s one of our strengths,” he said.
When asked about his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or should PSG win the Champions League, Dembele immediately dismissed the idea. “For me, that’s not what drives me the most. What drives me the most are the collective titles with the team, giving this club its first Champions League,” he concluded.
Dembele became one of Barcelona’s leading attackers after Neymar’s departure to Paris Saint-Germain for a record fee in 2017. Dembele joined the Catalans from Borussia Dortmund, soon carving his place in the team’s front three alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. Competing in the iconic Blaugrana colours between 2017 and 2023, the Frenchman won three La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey crowns and two Super Copa de Espana trophies.
Paris Saint-Germain lead their Champions League quarter-final tie 3-1. Ousmane Dembele will hope to fire the Ligue 1 outfit to the semi-finals when they travel to Villa Park on Tuesday. The winner of this tie would face either Arsenal or Real Madrid in the final four.
